eBooster® electrically driven compressor plus MGU equals greater efficiency and dynamic driving performance. This is a good way to summarize in a formula what BorgWarner is making possible with a new system solution for 48V electrification. The goal with the combination of an electrically operated impeller and a belt-driven motorgenerator unit is to offer vehicle manufacturers new opportunities for downsizing and downspeeding.

 

More and more electrical consumers are being used in modern vehicles, which calls for a high-performance on-board power supply system. The trend is therefore moving toward 48V on-board power supply systems, which can provide additional energy for more and more vehicle functions. BorgWarner was quick to recognize this development and drive forward development of a broad range of innovative 48V drive solutions. The intelligent combination of the eBooster® electrically operated compressor with the belt-driven motor-generator unit (MGU) represents an excellent example of this.

eBooster® allows further downsizing

The eBooster® is a compact electrically driven compressor with an active bypass that can be fitted in various positions in the intake or exhaust gas tract. It operates independently of the exhaust gas stream. The compressor wheel is driven purely electrically and can be accelerated extremely quickly. This means that the eBooster® is capable of generating the necessary boost pressure for outstanding torque at low revs and thereby almost completely eliminating any notion of turbo lag. The innovative turbocharging technology opens up excellent opportunities for further downsizing and downspeeding – with the corresponding benefits in terms of fuel economy and emission values.

MGU replaces the conventional alternator

high-performance, belt-driven motorgenerator unit (MGU). It is connected to the engine via an auxiliary unit drive and replaces the conventional alternator. The installation location is variable and can be adjusted to the respective architecture and packaging requirements. Engaging and disengaging torque allows sufficient regenerative energy to be recovered for the vehicle’s additional energy requirements, which effectively saves fuel. The 48V MGU offers 25 kW input and output and provides spontaneous, soft engine starts. In addition, BorgWarner offers a motor-generator unit with integrated electronics (MGI), which covers a very wide range of power requirements through numerous electromagnetic versions.

Ideal for 48V electrification

The eBooster® and MGU primarily play to their particular strengths when used in combination, as BorgWarner recently demonstrated quite impressively in a test vehicle. Here, the developers were able to implement a whole host of energy saving measures in a heavy pickup truck using the intelligent system combination. Benefits such as even greater torque at low revs for engine downsizing concepts, as well as the option to downspeed or recover energy lead to significant fuel savings. The test vehicle recovers electricity from braking energy and delivers greater pickup, while at the same time providing a more spontaneous response from the engine. Beside a range of further functions, the system also allows electrical energy to be made available for longer periods while the combustion engine is switched off. The eBooster® plus MGU power combination can be integrated into existing drive systems without any issues and therefore be recommended as a costeffective solution for 48V electrification.
